We do our very best to provide accurate, and fair estimates. It is preferable that you bring your instrument to the workshop for evaluation, and a written estimate. If this is not possible, you may ship the instrument to us, or send a descriptive email with a few digital photo attachments that identify your concerns. Written estimates will be issued after we have the opportunity to physically inspect the instrument.
Only the very best materials, ie., appropriately aged wooden components, bridges, strings, and set-up accessories are used on all instruments entrusted to us. The artistic restoration of instruments are subject to our best judgment, in consultation with you.
After repairs are completed, matching the finish of re-worked areas is one of the most challenging elements of restoration work. We are known for our expertise in this area. The skills required come from years of experience working with varied wood grain patterns, the layering of tinted translucent varnishes, and understanding the effects of reflected light on the project. Preserving the esthetic quality of the instrument’s original look is what distinguishes a superior job from one that is marginally acceptable.
ROTH:Refining the sound quality of Ernst Heinrich Roth Violins has become one of the shop's most popular upgrade services. E.H. Roth built many fine, distinctively German sounding instruments. After his passing in Markneukirchen in 1948, his son Albert carried on his work in a factory located in Bubenreuth / Ehrlangen. The wood used was consistent with Ernst's selection of high quality, naturally seasoned tonewood. The original Roth instruments are currently selling for $7,000 to $9,000 in shops around the world. The factory-made instruments, depending on the specific model, sell from $500 to $1,200. With some work, they can be made to sound every bit as good as the higher end instruments made by Ernst. If you own a factory-made Roth, you may consider upgrading it.
STAINER:Significant tone enhancements can also be made to the less expensive Stainer brand of instruments. Our upgrade package includes the addition of corner blocks, re-graduation of the sound plates, fitting of a new bass bar, and finishing to enhance the overall look.
